Batman and Joker

To no one’s surprise, The Dark Knight was a massive hit this past weekend, earning $155.34 million in the U.S. to easily take the top spot at the box office. In fact, the Batman movie became the top-earning movie of all-time, beating out previous record holder Spiderman 3, which made $151.1 million in 2007.

However, according to MSN.com, Spiderman may have actually sold more tickets.

At 2007's average price of $6.88, 'Spider-Man 3' sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means 'The Dark Knight' would have sold 21.94 million tickets."

I was involved in a wedding this weekend, so I didn’t have a chance to see The Dark Knight. I’m gonna go ahead and say that it was awesome anyway. I’m sure it was better than Spiderman so any alleged controversy is moot. What I want to know is this: Where are the movie theaters selling these tickets for under $7? In New York City movie tickets cost $92 (roughly).

I know NYC is expensive, but still. By my estimations that means there has to be a state out there where movies cost four cents. Or maybe there’s a place in Nebraska where they actually pay you to go see Batman. I think I’m going to go visit there, because I still have to see Batman, and I blew all this month’s rent money on booze, so that would really be killing two birds with one stone.
