Many intelligent people will tell you that “The Hills” is a reprehensible show. If you so much as mention the show, you could get responses ranging from “I refuse to watch it” to “It’s stupid” to “It’s an abomination that is slowly decaying the moral fabric of America and turning young girls into idiotic, promiscuous women.” Even people who enjoy the show will agree you that it’s not the most thought-provoking program around.
Yet, it’s pretty much the only thing keeping MTV afloat.
The show’s ratings are huge. The girls are on the covers of magazines like Rolling Stone. There is constant buzz about the show on blogs and in chat rooms, and often these same intelligent people that despise the show are the ones doing the talking.
This begs the obvious question: If “The Hills” is such a terrible show, why are we all paying attention?
Are the stars of “The Hills” setting a poor example and encouraging young girls to focus on looks and possessions rather than personality or intelligence? Or are they simply the poster children for a nation of voyeuristic and materialistic citizens?
Is “The Hills” dumbing down our society, or are we dumbing down ourselves?
I have a feeling Audrina Partidge was pondering this moral conundrum as she was showing off her cans to the entire universe the other day.
