The fallout from Nikki Blonsky’s airport brawl continues this week, as Nikki’s father Carl has been denied bail.
For those who don’t know, Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky and her family fought the family of former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Bianca Golden in a Caribbean airport last week. The fight started as an argument over saved seats, and quickly became physical (it was rumored that both sides shouted racial epithets). Nikki and Bianca were arrested for misdemeanor assault and released shortly afterward.
Carl Blonsky, however, was charged with assault with grievous body harm, a felony. He allegedly attacked Golden’s mother, hurting her so badly that she had to be airlifted to the hospital. Blonsky’s defense team is trying to argue that, well, she’s faking. From People:
Asking for bail, Smith argued that Blonsky has a clean criminal record and was injured himself in the brawl. "My client ... is not a wealthy man. He works in a sewage plant. No prior convictions. He volunteers at his local church, coaches softball, baseball and soccer. He is taking Xanax, Crestor, and has nerve damage to his arm. He takes Percocet."
Still, the judge denied bail, saying that as a foreigner, Blonsky is a flight risk. "This is ridiculous," Blonsky's attorney told PEOPLE outside court. "My client is in bad health, and he does not."
Carl has been in jail on the island of Turks and Caicos since the incident on July 29th. He will now have to remain in prison until August 19th, when he faces a trial.
Carl’s trying really hard to get out of there. He should reconsider and just relax and enjoy it. Sure, he’s in jail, but it’s a Caribbean jail. They’re pretty lax down there. He gets free meals, he has activity time, and the whole island is a beach. Worst case, it’s like he bought a bad vacation package. So he doesn’t get to use the free shuttle to Senor Frog’s. He can still lay out and soak in the sun. In fact he’s probably kicking back having mojitos with the locals right now.
