Britney Spears’ appearance on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards was a disaster of truly epic proportions. Brit-Brit showed up looking like an extra from “Showgirls 2: Straight To Video,” then proceeded to dance out of rhythm with glazed over eyes while occasionally singing along to her single “Gimme More,” which was playing in the background. The infamous appearance helped catapult “Gimme More” to the top of the charts, but the lasting image of Britney’s performance that stuck in most people’s heads was that of an extremely catastrophic one. Some would argue that Britney’s 2007 VMA performance made Ashlee Simpson’s SNL lip-synching debacle seem like Hendrix at Woodstock in comparison.
And now she’s back! That’s right folks, Britney Spears has taped a segment for the 2008 VMAs. It is not a performance, but rather a comedy segment featuring a back-and-forth between Spears and VMA host Russell Brand. People.com has the scoop:

It’s nice to see her get a shot at redemption. She’s had her difficulties in recent years, but to me Britney is sort of like everyone’s old girlfriend that you really liked, but you were just too young and immature, so it didn’t work out. Even though I’ve moved on, I’ll always cherish the memories, like the time I saw her video at Foot Locker and rushed home to Google her, or the first time she was on TRL a month later and I was like, “hey it’s that chick from the Foot Locker video with the porn star name!” Or the snake. I’ll never forget the snake.
Britney can also be pretty funny at times, and she seems like a chick I could hang out with. At least until she did a few too many tequila shots and tried to marry me in a shack somewhere off the boardwalk in Atlantic City, and then I got held up at gunpoint and some dude took my credit card and used it to sign up for a bunch of gambling sites. That would suck. But my point is, this segment could be pretty decent. Prior to last year’s effort, Britney always owned the VMAs, so it will be interesting to see how this year goes.
Spears is also up for two awards this year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, for “Piece of Me.” She has been nominated 17 times in previous years and has never won, which to me is the biggest sham in MTV history. Have you SEEN the “I’m a Slave 4 U” video? It’s transcendent. And what about “Oops… I Did It Again?” Red spandex, man!! But hey, the Jonas Brothers, right? Come on MTV, get your act together.
