Melissa Ethridge, in protest to Proposition 8 passing, has decided she will not pay her state taxes anymore. In case you don't know anything at all, Melissa is gay and Prop 8 banned gay marriage. The Daily Beast:
Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay! I am sure there will be a little box on the tax forms now single, married, divorced, gay, check here if you are gay, yeah, that's not so bad.
Now I'm not one of those people who sees a homosexual and runs the other way screaming while leaving a stream of pepper spray in my trail, but I am one of those people who has had to abide by all the laws of the nation. Yes, 200 years ago if something unconstitutional or ridiculous passed, there was a revolution over it. But that went away with those crazy white wigs everyone used to wear, so now we must accept laws that pass or fail.
Honestly, the only thing this proposition did was save a bunch of gay people from the misery of marriage. Melissa should be required to pay even higher taxes for that. Lucky.
